Thrift into Gift

What if there was a way you could turn your thrift store donations into a shopping trip for a local family in need? Newcomers Access Center (NAC), a nonprofit that helps refugees and immigrants, has partnered with the ACTS Thrift Store on Foothill Blvd near Garey Ave in Pomona to make it happen.

Here’s how it works. Box up all the unwanted items taking up space in your house, but before donating, visit newcomersaccesscenter.org and print out the NAC/ACTS flyer and tape it onto your box. When ACTS receives the donation, it gives NAC credit. NAC in turn gives vouchers to refugee and immigrant families. This Thrift-Into-Gift process allows you to get rid of the things you no longer want—the sweaters you don’t wear, the vase that doesn’t match your decor, the breadmaker you stopped using years ago, for example—and turn them into credit that families can use to buy exactly what they need—maybe a set of dishes, school clothes, or a bike.

The beauty of this arrangement is that it is a win-win for everyone. You gain space in your closet and a tidier home plus a donation receipt that can help come tax time.  ACTS Thrift gains business. And NAC families get to shop using vouchers that lower their cost.

The ACTS Thrift Store is located at 232 East Foothill Blvd in Pomona between Towne and Garey Avenues. Go to the parking area in the rear of the store. Be sure your flyer is taped on and tell them that the donation is on behalf of Newcomers Access Center. For the latest hours and to make sure when donations are accepted, call 909-491-3199 or visit the website actsthrift.org. You can arrange for large items to be picked up by ACTS.

In addition to our partnership with ACTS, for some high-value items that might be useful for our families, NAC can coordinate direct donations. If you have such an item that you would like to offer directly to our refugee and immigrant families, please contact NAC at administrator@newcomersaccesscenter.org with a photo and description as well as the city the item is located in.
