USC students learned about Newcomer’s Access Center’s work helping Afghan refugees in Southern California during a Zoom panel held October 7, 2021, sponsored by Delta Phi Epsilon (DPE), a service-oriented international relations fraternity. Each semester, DPE has a “Week of Action” when the group focuses on a pressing current issue. “We spend the week raising awareness and educating students alongside fundraising for and hosting a discussion with an organization,” explained student Bradley Norton, DPE’s Director of External Affairs. “This year, we are focusing on Afghanistan, and I came across Newcomers Access Center in an LA Times article.” Norton arranged for NAC board member & Treasurer, Sandy Hester to participate in a panel discussion with the students on Zoom. The panel kicked off with a recent four-minute news video by Spectrum 1 highlighting NAC Board Vice President Anne Thorward. Hester followed with stories of Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan refugee families coming into the local community. She reported NAC is currently serving approximately 45 families (240 individuals) with more arriving from Afghanistan in the weeks to come. During the Week of Action, DPE raised more than $1,000 to donate to NAC. “We appreciate the generosity of these students in donating and in giving us the opportunity to raise awareness about refugees in our community,” Hester said. “We hope to work with them again in the future.
